What are 'second skirtings'?

'Second skirtings' are bits of fleece that don't meet our usual standards of cleanliness or quality, but with a little extra TLC they will be useable. 'First' skirtings are the unusable bits of fleece, such as soiled or matted areas, and these are discarded. 'Second' skirtings are then removed from the main fleece for reasons such as too much VM, cross-fibering, breech wool, short staple length, or discoloration that may be difficult to scour. These skirtings are thrown all together in a big bag.

Do you have a felting or rug project? Do you want some budget wool and don't mind some extra cleaning and sorting work? If so, our second skirtings grab bags might be for you!

  • Second skirtings are sold in 2lb bags. Buy 3 or more bags for 20% off. You will receive a mix of wool from Romney, Coopworth, and BFL sheep. Your bag may have a mix of colors and staple lengths. Your wool will likely have medium to high VM in some areas. Every bag is slightly different. Sales on second skirtings are final and sold as-is.

  • Our second skirtings bags come from a mix of all of our sheep, including Romneys, Coopworths, and BFLs.

RAW FLEECE

All our fleeces are sold raw and skirted. This means unusable parts of the fleece have been removed after shearing, but the fleece is unwashed and unprocessed. Your new fleece has been worn by a sheep for 6-12 months, so it will naturally have lanolin, dirt, sweat, and sometimes a little vegetable matter.

SHIPPING & RETURNS

We ship using Pirate Ship to ensure you get the best possible shipping rate. Fleeces are shipped in vacuum sealed bags.

We want all of our customers to be happy with their fleece. If you are not satisfied, please let us know without 60 days of purchase so that we can arrange a replacement or refund.

CARE & STORAGE

Raw fleece needs to be able to breath while stored. Please remove your new fleece from the vacuum-sealed packaging as soon as you receive it. Store in a plastic tub, cotton pillowcase, wooden box, or other breathable storage option. Keep it in a cool, dry location until you are ready to wash and process your new fleece. To reduce the risk of moths, add cedar balls or shavings to your storage container.
